Modern Moorish Mosaic Plant Pot

I've had these terracotta plant pots for a while. I really love the simple shape of them, but wasn't really sure what to use them for as they are fairly small for most plants. But then I realised that succulents and cactus would be perfect in them. Which then got me thinking about dry, hot, desert, ancient culture, and I came up with a mosaic design that I hope has a feel of all of that plus is a little bit modern too with the shiny iridescent tiles and translucent tiles giving depth and interest, hence the name Modern Moorish as a nod to both styles. They would look great in the garden or in the house. I really like how they've turned out. In fact, I'm going to make a matching bird bath using these shapes too.

This was spotted by one of my eagle eyed Facebook followers when I showed a work in progress shot of this dish. I was aiming for a neat pattern of butterflies in the base of this water dish, but she thought it was showing some upside down heart shapes. It is actually a reversible design, which is great. So you can either have Blue Butterflies, or Blue Hearts as your water dish decoration.

These house number mosaic plaques have been designed to look like they've got a vintage Liberty style fabric background. The mosaic is made up of small flowers, and butterflies, filled in with small leaves. The grout on the front design has then been overpainted with weatherproof paint to create a rough texture to finish the vintage fabric look.

I noticed something about my mosaic designs a while ago. I know I like colour and pattern, but I also noticed that my designs fell into two categories. They either look like fabric designs, or ceramic designs. This latest bird bath Deep Sea is definitely a ceramic style design. Each colour line of fish has an iridescent fish to add metallic shine and interest. The border in two colours adds depth too.

This is another smaller sized bird bath. I had already designed a 25cm version of a stylised ammonite fossil bed. This is a 19cm bird bath with a single blue ammonite design in the centre. The tile colours used in the ammonite are shades of blue and turquoise, including translucent dark turquoise, and a sapphire blue iridescent tiles. The surrounding tiles are a light stone grey which gives the impression of the rock of a fossil bed.

25cm Ammonite Bird Bath

The larger 25cm bird bath has more ammonites showing and partially showing through the grey rock bed, made with mid grey tiles. These ammonites are in shades of green, and grey blue, and also include translucent and iridescent tiles to add interest and depth the the design.

Folksy Handmade - Blue Lagoon

Inspired by the colours in my new Laguna Mini Bird Bath, which reminded me of the colours you'd see in a lagoon (the clue's in the name), I had a nosey round for some other watery palettes, and came up with this fab little lot, which match my little bird bath perfectly, and some even have a rippling pattern too.

Mosaic Garden Hanging Decorations

Going back to my roots with these three items. The very first handmade things I sold online were a set of hanging garden mosaic decorations. I had the idea to try and come up with something a bit different for the garden because I could never find any garden ornaments that I liked for myself in the garden centres, or on the high street. That then led on to me setting up my handmade shops and website for selling the garden items I created.

The first hanging decoration I've listed is the Turquoise Blue Double Mosaic, which has a beaded join meaning both decorations can turn independently. It's tiled on all sides so it can be hung to be viewed from all angles. This one could be used as a suncatcher too as it's got squares of mirror in that catch the light and throw it around the garden as the decoration turns in the breeze.

The idea of the design on the Amethyst Dragonfly Mosaic Garden Decoration was to have dragonflies looking like they were flitting around as the ornament turned around. It's got the same design on both sides of 2 dragonflies with their misty grey iridescent wings, and slightly raised (which gives a slight 3D effect) shiny black bodies. The background tiles are two shades of dark plum / amethyst / violet purple tiles.

On both decorations the tiles on the sides have had their edges left ungrouted so it creates a border for the face tiles and when the light shines through the edges you get a lovely effect of the tiles lighting up like opalescent stained glass.

The last of the hanging decorations I've called Tutti Fruiti because of the fruity, bright orange and red tiles used. This one also has mirror used so it could be used as a suncatcher to cast dots of reflected light around the garden. The other colours used are pastels and white, and the hanging filament has been beaded with complimentary colours. All these decorations can be left out in the garden all year so are great for adding colour and interest all year round.

Sea Glass Starburst

This handcast base with glass decoration is my lastest listing to my shop. You could use this ornament indoors, but I designed it for use in the garden. All the materials are weatherproof so it can be left outside all year (although I might just pop it under cover if it's going to be icy, just to protect the glass a bit). The design is a starburst of pale green, turquoise and deep blue sapphire pebbles. Which, because the surface they are on has a sandy texture, have the look of sea glass on a beach. When it's placed in sunlight the colours sparkle. There's an indentation in the centre that will take a standard size tealight, so it could be used at night too, with candlelight illuminating the glass. Perfect.

Aqua Daisy Mosaic Garden Metal Plant Support Stake

I have been perfecting the design for these plant stakes for a while. I've come up with a decorative stake that is secure enough to be used practically too. The metal rod for the stake can be screwed into the bottom of the mosaic ball topper meaning the stake can be used at an angle without the mosaic top falling off as it could do if it was just perched on top. And it's lightweight enough not to fall over with it's own weight.

The pebble daisy design on the top is raised above the ball so the light comes through and really makes pebble colours shine. If you look at the stake from the side it looks a bit like a poppy seed head.

These plant support stakes come in two colour versions, the Aqua Daisy and the Blue Daisy, and would look great just to add interest and colour in a border or container, as well as being useful for holding back flopping plants. I have enjoyed 'engineering' this design.







Pastel Mosaic Daisy Bird Bath

 







I seem to have a thing about daisies at the moment because I've got my new folky daisies all over my banners and blog (not sure if the daisies down the sides of the blog are staying, I think they may be a bit distracting. I'll live with them for a bit because I like them, they remind me of vintage embroidered trim), and I've also got a Pastel Mosaic Daisy Bird Bath on my website and in my Folksy shop at the moment too.

I think I'm pining for the spring and summer. Not long now.

Goldfish and The Med.

When I was painting the hearts on my denim patchwork style Bright Hearts pot I was painting an orange heart onto a blue background which gave me the idea to paint some goldfish onto a turquoise tile and have them swimming round the outside of a pot. So the Goldfish Pond Pot was created. I've added some pond grasses in matt and transluscent green, and some transluscent aqua tiles to add to the watery feel, and to add depth to the design. I think it would look great with something grassy sticking out of the top, giving the impression that the grasses are growing out of the water like reeds. It would definitely be a fun addition to the garden.






Mediterranean Hearts Mosaic Plant Pot


The other mosaic pot I've made was inspired in part by the glass hearts that are included. The colours of the hearts are aqua and mid green. They also have a very watery quality to them, so I created a tile pallete to compliment them and that, in turn, reminded me of the colours of the Mediterranean. So it became the Mediterranean Hearts Pot, which I think fits well. People always think fondly of The Med. With the terracotta of the pot as well it's got a really nice warm look to it. This pot would look really good with a Mediterraean type plant in it, like something with silver leaves, or a cactus or succulent, or a geranium. The plant and pot would then make a fab Mothers Day gift for a garden loving mum.

These mosaic flat cap mushrooms are the latest garden ornaments to be added to my Folksy shop. These would be great for placing into a border, or on a patio, to give you colour. I got the idea when I was making one of my bird baths and the saucer was sitting upside-down next to an upside-down pot.

There two colour options at the moment - shades of Turquoise and Greens, and shades of Blues and Greys. The base 'stalks' are both finished in neutral cream, sand, brown and terracotta.

The idea for this Hidden Treasure Bird Bath followed on from making my Fossil one. I wanted to make one that showed finding treasure in rocks, like precious metals or gemstones. So this design is representing cracks in rock, and the treasure sparkling through. When the bird bath is full, it'll add to the 'hidden' effect as you get a glimpse of the iridescent stones sparkling underneath the water in between the lines of grey tiles which are like layers of slate.

 I can call it a collection now because I've finished the pot. At 15cm it is the perfect size to use as a base for my Abstract bird bath. But even on it's own its a great way of adding colour to your garden. The colours used are exactly the same as the bird bath, including the ribbed rim which gives instant age.

I have been experimenting with pattern and colour combination again, and I've created this Purple & Blue Abstract Mosaic Bird Bath. The colours of this bird bath came from the stone I was using being purple, and the iridescent tile I wanted to use having a purple iridescence on a blue background. So I decided on the colour pallete starting with shades of blue and purple and added turquoises and greys. I had the idea to make the design out of full square tiles, half tile rectangles, and quarter tile squares randomly placed. On the rim the tiles have grooves and the grout has collected in the grooves and gives a really nice effect and an instant aged look.

I am in the process of making a matching pot for this bird bath. So, depending on how they are received it might turn into another ongoing range. Watch this space.

The other bird bath I've listed recently is another version of my Ripple design. This time I've added tiles to the rim of the bath. It's given yet another different feel to this design. It reminds me of a ceramic bowl that's got circles of glaze on it.

I bloomin' love mosaic. You can get so many different styles and feels using one material in different colour palettes, and patterns.

 I've been re-inspired to make some more mosaic Christmas ornaments. This is the first batch of finished ones. My Mosaic Stained Glass Look Christmas Decorations. The tiles are a combination of plain colour, and handpainted layers to give me the exact combinations I wanted. The colours used in the baubles are red, magenta, green, blue, turquoise, orange, yellow with a transluscent gold glaze, and a totally gold tile colour. The grout has been overpainted with black paint to show the tile colours off, and to give the stained glass look. Perfect for Christmas.

These Christmas ornaments can used indoors or outside in the garden, as all the materials used are weatherproof.
