Old English Roses Mosaic Garden Bird Bath

Some design ideas come from customers asking for tweeks. This time a customer asked for the Canal Folk Roses Design (left), but with red and pink roses (middle) . I thought that created a really different feel to the design so I expanded on it and came up with the Old English Rose design (right). It's got a lovely cottage feel to it, but it's also quite modern with the blousy flowers that are quite on trend at the moment.

The idea and the reality. I've had this idea for a while, to make some sort of mosaic topiary, and I've finally managed to try it out and I think it's worked out quite well. Very close to how I visualised it and first made a graphic to explain it on Facebook for feedback. The mosaic plaque is designed to be hung on a wall or fence, then you get to be the designer after that, making a unique display by adding your own choice of pot, filled with whatever plants and flowers you choose, and then you link the pot and plaque with a stem of your choice (I've used a cut down bamboo cane). No pests, no diseases, no pruning, and permanent full bloom roses, what's not to like?

Pink Roses Mosaic Garden Bird Bath

After making a hanging heart with this new design on, I thought it would work well in a bird bath too. And it did. A few people are saying this design has a Mackintosh feel about it. I think that's the black grout I've used this time because the tiles are quite pale in colour so would get a bit lost in the usual grey I use. So, after the heart and bird bath in pink roses, I think I can feel a different colour version coming next. I love the new year. I think it's when the Xmas rush of making lots of current designs is over, and I finally get a chance to think straight, then all the new ideas I had half thought out when I was in a making frenzy come flooding out. Pink Roses Hanging Heart Garden Decoration

The first new design of 2015 from me, the Pink Roses Hanging Heart Garden Decoration. I had designed the rose and used it in a bird bath a few months ago, and I fancied using it to create a fabric look on a hanging heart. I used some very delicate iridescent and plain pastel pink tiles for the roses, and used fresh greens for the leaves to give a nice bright background. It's worked really well with the black grout popping the colours out. So 2015 has started well with this design, which I like so much I am going to use it in a bird bath, and I'm going to try more colourways of it too. Sometimes you just need a simple design to show something off. I wanted to collect a group of tiles to represent a rose garden. When I'd decided which ones to use they looked so good just randomly placed next to each other on my desk I thought why not put them into a simple random design in the bird bath. This circular design matches the soft, calm palette and just gently draws your eye around. It's a great bird bath for some muted colour in the garden.

It's been a very busy July, and I've been selling out of a lot of designs without a chance to make more up. Another new, but old, design added to stock. I've 
made a lot of fish pond bird baths. But this time I've decided to leave the goldfish out and make a waterlily pond so I've filled the gaps with a couple of extra waterlily flowers, and lily pads. I've made one of the waterlily flowers in a peach/pink colour as some waterlilies change colour as the flowers get older. I've also used a lighter blue for the background this time. I think it's worked well. The iridescent tiles in the lily pads, and the pink flower add extra interest to the design.

I made a mosaic for a bird box recently with a pattern using the smaller, lighter coloured porcelain daisies. I liked the end result so much, I've decided to add it to a bird bath. The porcelain daises are a light matt rose shade, and the larger daisies are made with glass tiles and have a deeper slighty more translucent pink tone.

I've got other bird baths designs in my shop with the larger daisies on them, but on those I've used them like a fabric pattern so they are evenly spaced over the base of the birdbath.

On this Rose Daisy version I've randomly placed the flowers in a semi circle spray, and filled the border and background with one colour, a pastel aqua shade. It's created a lovely, soft effect to the design.

I have been experimenting with handpainting colour on pattern again, and I've come up with this Bright Hearts Mosaic Plant Pot. I wanted a random pattern of colourful hearts on a muted mixed background. The blues were perfect as a base for the orange, yellow and magenta hearts.

It was only when the pot was finished that I realised it reminded me a bit of denim patchwork. And there was the inspiration for this week's Folksy Friday collection, which has been added to January's board. Click the link below to see the new items -

This is my latest bird bath design, it's called Retro Roses. It's another one that's been inspired by vintage fabric. This time it's 50's style fabric. Pale pink roses, on a jet black background. The spaces are filled with tiny rosebuds, with apple green leaves. The jet black tiles are slightly shiney so they set off the matt pink roses really well.

Mosaic Stained Glass Effect Christmas Ornament

 I've been re-inspired to make some more mosaic Christmas ornaments. This is the first batch of finished ones. My Mosaic Stained Glass Look Christmas Decorations. The tiles are a combination of plain colour, and handpainted layers to give me the exact combinations I wanted. The colours used in the baubles are red, magenta, green, blue, turquoise, orange, yellow with a transluscent gold glaze, and a totally gold tile colour. The grout has been overpainted with black paint to show the tile colours off, and to give the stained glass look. Perfect for Christmas.

These Christmas ornaments can used indoors or outside in the garden, as all the materials used are weatherproof.
