This garden ornament is great for anyone that loves bees. The mosaic heart has a pale lilac background, and is edged with lavender. The reverse is painted purple to match. The mosaic bee has iridescent wings that shine with metallic gold and magenta, and there are two translucent amber glass gems finishing the design.

To complete the bee-lover package, this ornament comes with a mini packet of seeds for a plant whose flowers are good for attracting bees to the garden. You could even hang this decoration near the plants to create a bee corner.

I've been creating another new product to add to my website. I have made these mosaic plaques in the past, but usually in smaller sizes as hanging decorations for the garden. This time, though, I decided to adapt one to become a wind chime. I really enjoy this creative process for a new design. First, some online research to see if it's being done already. Nope. Great. Then, sourcing the materials for the job. Next, researching how to create what I want from them, although there actually isn't that much to find online on this subject, so I've had to be engineer again and work it out myself. Finally, designing the mosaic to give the effect I wanted, which was for a contemporary, modern look wind chime.

I have hand cut the tube chimes to various lengths to create a really lovely, harmonious sound, the drilled them and hand tied them to the plaque. The plaque tile colours work really well with the glass hearts. One compliments the colours and one stands out as an accent. And the hearts sit proud of the mosaic meaning the light can shine through them, lighting the colours up. The plaque hanging hole is reinforced to take it's weight. The chimes are galvanised and anodised to prevent corrosion. All the mosaic materials are weather, and frost resistant. It's a fab garden worthy item.

It would look and sound great in a garden, but it could be used indoors too. As it's tiled on all surfaces it can be hung so it's viewed from all angles, like on a tree branch, or hanging basket bracket. Or put it in a hallway to greet you as you open the door.

Wildlife Mosaic

I've created a couple more of my mosaic Dragonfly and Bee designs. This time on some fab slate paddlestones. The colours of the slate really come out when they are wet. The purple slate becomes a gorgeous dark plum. The grey slate becomes mottled with a pastel green. They look really good. The mosaic dragonfly has misty grey wings with pastel pink, blue and green in some light angles. But when the light catches them just right they shine with metallic blue, magenta and gold. The bee has translucent blue wings that shine electric blue and gold.



Folksy Handmade - Starbursts and Sea Glass

I made this Sea Glass Starburst decoration because I really wanted to use the glass pebbles raised up so the light could go through them. Because the surface they are set in has a slightly sandy texture it's made the glass pebbles look like sea glass. So this gave me a theme for this week's Folksy Friday. It's a colour, design, and material theme. Blues, greens and amber, starbursts and glass.

Peacock Eye Mosaic Garden Bird Bath

 Here we are then, 2012.  Funny how a change in the date can kick start your mind. I feel all enthused, and I've got loads of ideas for items to make this year. Or, attempt to make in some cases, I'm not entirely sure how to make some of the mind's eye items into reality. All part of the fun of designing though.



Peacock Eye Mosaic Garden Bird Bath


My first item I've made this year was inspired by some glass pebbles that I've got. I was playing around with combinations of them when I suddenly put them into an order that reminded me of a peacock feather's eye. That then turned into creating a pallete of other colours on that theme. That then turned into arranging the design. That then turned into the Peacock Eye Mosaic Garden Bird Bath.

The design juices are flowing again.

The idea for this Hidden Treasure Bird Bath followed on from making my Fossil one. I wanted to make one that showed finding treasure in rocks, like precious metals or gemstones. So this design is representing cracks in rock, and the treasure sparkling through. When the bird bath is full, it'll add to the 'hidden' effect as you get a glimpse of the iridescent stones sparkling underneath the water in between the lines of grey tiles which are like layers of slate.
