Coral Reef Mosaic Garden Bird Bath

Now your garden birds can take a dip on a Coral Reef. There are brightly coloured tropical fish swimming against the shimmering water made with four shades of aqua blues and see greens. A bit of fun for the garden, and great for adding a splash of colour.

Time To Update

January and February are my time to start getting some of the designs I've thought of in the Xmas run up created. There's no time to make anything new in those weeks before Christmas, but when I'm really busy that's when inspiration starts hitting. So I've got a scrappy bit of paper with a list of designs I want to make, and I've started working my way through them.

First up are these two updated version of designs I've made before. I wanted to try the Elements design with a black background as I've started to use black grout a bit on certain colour palettes. The idea was to have a super contrast of rainbow to make it look like sparkly layers of crystals in rock. Like diamond seems in coal.

The second updated design is the Fish Shoal. I've made this before just in blues and  greens, this time I wanted to add splashes of bright colour in, and what better to do that with than bright orange goldfish.

Two fishy mirrors for you. Both have the fish circling in alternate directions to create a dynamic design. One has a random colour pattern with iridescent fish dotted around to add metallic shine. The other has graduating colour fishes. Both have the slightly raised mirror so you can see the slightly greeny mirror glass that adds to the watery feel. Both are designed to be used in any room of the home, including bathrooms.

I noticed something about my mosaic designs a while ago. I know I like colour and pattern, but I also noticed that my designs fell into two categories. They either look like fabric designs, or ceramic designs. This latest bird bath Deep Sea is definitely a ceramic style design. Each colour line of fish has an iridescent fish to add metallic shine and interest. The border in two colours adds depth too.

Half designed as a bird bath. But also half designed with summer bbqs in mind. This saucer with it's three fish design is a great practical and decorative bird bath for the garden. But you could also use it in the summer when dining al fresco. I could see this saucer holding the condiments at a bbq. Or with water in and with floating candles in it on the garden table as a table decoration. It's up to you how you use it.

I've just added this new bird bath to my website, where it will stay as an exclusive until after Christmas. I love making these mini ponds. This one has two goldfish, a white water lily, and some of the green lily pads are made with iridescent green tiles which shine with metallic blue and gold as the light catches them. The background is two shades of deep blue to give a shimmering, watery effect. This one is a smaller sized 21cm which is still perfect for smaller birds to bathe in. And it's a perfect pond size to fit into even the smallest garden. You could even put it on a balcony.

I have already done a Folksy Friday

on Ponds, because I love ponds. My own little one in my small garden has a tiny water lily, 2 goldfish and (a growing population of) pond snails. It's inspired me to make a Water Lily Pond themed mosaic bird bath. I decided to make it stylised using angular shapes to create the features and background. I think it gives the bird bath the feeling of movement. And it also gives a Japanese look to the design, with a slight origami feel to the shapes.

The silvery fish are made with iridised tiles so they shine with the colours of the rainbow in certain light angles, just like real fish. The background is in two shades of deep sapphire to add a flickering quality to the 'water'. It should be really effective with real water in when it's filled. Perfect for if you've always wanted a pond, but haven't got room. Or for if you just want a unique, decorative bird bath for your garden.

Folksy Handmade - Aqua & Gold Fish

For this week's Folksy Friday I thought I'd gather a shoal of fish together. Did you see on the news that they are having to move fish out of some streams and rivers as they dry up in the drought? All the fish they were netting were silver. It got me to thinking that somewhere in the world the rivers and streams have goldfish in them as their wild fish, and some have those brilliant neon aqua-blue fish that you see in aquariums. Wouldn't that be great? Shoals of goldfish and neons swimming in our streams. So, in honour of that odd train of thought, I've put together a collection of exotic blue and gold fish.
